Abstract: Over the last few years, energy system digitalisation has become firmly embedded within energy system futuring. Combination of data hardware and software can create opportunities for system balancing, enable further integration of low carbon generation, and reduce the need for infrastructure investment (Judson et al 2020). As such, energy system digitalisation has been conceptualised as coevolving alongside not just with decarbonisation, but also with two other phenomena: decentralization and democratisation (Soutar, 2021). In this context, energy system digitalisation is presumed – at least within policy and industry - as both inevitable and enabling for a ‘sustainable’ energy future.
